When to plant onions in spring: tips for a bountiful harvest
Onions are one of those vegetables that are easy enough to grow in your garden. However, in order to get a good and shelf-stable harvest, you need to take care of the proper planting and care.
The Klioma blog has explained how to do it. Its experts talked about all the intricacies of growing this crop.
Preparing the soil and choosing the right neighbors
There are several ways to plant onions in the ground. In any case, the bed where you plan to grow the vegetable needs to be prepared properly.
First of all, check the acidity – onions like neutral soi. Also, make sure that the place where you will grow the vegetable does not stagnate. It should also be well-lit. Thus, there should be no tall plants nearby that block the sun’s rays.
To treat the area with organic fertilizers, stick to a dosage of up to 5 kg of the product per square meter of the garden. Also, use fresh ash for fertilizing, which will protect the crop from harmful insects.
And, of course, make sure that the onions have the right neighbors. It grows best next to legumes, potatoes, and all types of tomatoes. Also, do not plant onions in the same place for more than 4 years in a row as it will decrease the yield.
How to sow onions in spring
For spring sowing, fresh onion seeds work best. Before you put them in the ground, soak the seeds in water for a day, changing the water to fresh every 4 hours.
If you notice poor quality seeds, they should be treated with potassium permanganate. Soak them in a solution for 30-40 minutes, and then proceed with the sowing. Important note: store-bought seeds do not need this treatment as it was done already.
Keep in mind that onions are quite cold-resistant and begin to wake up when the temperature exceeds only 3 degrees. If the weather forecast still predicts frosts and the onions are already planted, cover the bed with plastic wrap.
The best conditions for planting onions are ground temperatures of 12 degrees or more. Then the crop will quickly take root and give a bountiful harvest.
Remember to loosen the soil in the garden before the first sprouts appear. This will provide more air for germination.
